Cost reduction in basic ship design supported by a single structural model - A practical approach

The use of CAD 3D models in basic ship design is today a reasonably extended practice. Nevertheless, 3D models in early design stages, are in general created for one particular use with the specific modelling tools of each software application, highly customized for such purpose, and with limited possibilities for reusing in other disciplines or phases of the project.

Some years ago, as part of a collaborative R&D action, a consortium of European companies comprising shipyards, designers and software developers carried out a research for the use of ship manufacturing detailed CAD models for FEM analysis, via automatic idealization, aimed to remove the time and resources required for FEM modelling from the overall design budget.
This paper presents an evolution of such approach, in terms of practical use-cases. In particular, it is described the use of the modelling tools of one marine CAD vendor, specifically configured for early structural modelling, combined with a FEM pre-processing application, one of the market standards in the automotive and aircraft industries.
